Pastor
David K. Asendorf Pastor Dave Asendorf is a 2007 graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. After serving his internship at Salem in 2005-2006, he began his ministry here on January 1, 2007. Prior to entering seminary Dave worked 25 years for the Federal government. Pastor Dave also serves on the Directing Committee of the University of Maryland Campus Ministry. He and his wife Nancy have two children. Pastor Dave has experienced the Salem congregation as a welcoming community grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ. The people of Salem are generous and seek to share their abundant gifts with those in need. The Salem congregation is healthy and growing, and open to newcomers. Pastor Timothy D. Jahn Pastor Tim Jahn joined Salem in July 2011 as the Associate Pastor. Pastor Jahn graduated from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio in 2007. He was called by Grace Lutheran Church in Easton in July 2007. During his tenure at Grace, the congregation grew in membership and went from one Sunday worship service to two. Pastor Jahn and his wife Laura have two young children. Music is one of Pastor Jahn’s passions. He has a strong musical background and plays the guitar. Another passion of Pastor Jahn’s is the outdoors. He cites his experience as a youth counselor in a Lutheran outdoors ministry in Michigan as instrumental in his decision to enter the ministry.
Pastor
Emeritus
Pastor Emeritus Ed Whetstone served as Salem’s pastor from 1977 to 2010. In recognition of his service to Salem, the Church Council voted to name him Pastor Emeritus upon his retirement in June 2010. After early years in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Hagerstown, Maryland, he attended Gettysburg College and the Lutheran seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was ordained in 1971. He and his wife Vicky are parents of two grown children and proud grandparents of two grandsons in St. Paul. Since youth his most cherished bible passage is Micah 6:8, “What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and love kindness and walk humbly with your God?”
Mary Miller
Director of Music Mary Miller has been Salem’s Director of Music and Organist since 2001. Previously, she held the same positions at Mt. Hebron Presbyterian Church in Ellicott City. She comes from a musical family where the piano and organ were played constantly. Following in her mother’s and brother’s footsteps, she started piano lessons as a child. In 1989 she began studying piano at the Peabody Preparatory under the direction of Miss Beth Jovich and then at the Conservatory under the direction of Mr. James Warthen. Her organ studies have been under the direction of Michael Britt. She has earned a Certification in Church Music from Colby College in Maine. Mary plays for all Salem’s worship services, as well as directing our music program and three of our five choirs at Salem.
Don Schwartz
Parish Assistant for Christian Education and Youth Don Schwartz enjoys his opportunity to serve the Salem congregation in Parish Education and Youth leadership. He has been a member of Salem since 1991 and has served as a Parish Assistant since 1997. In addition to providing weekly support for the Sunday School program, he directs a small, but well attended Drama Camp for children ages 6-13 during the summer. His work with the youth centers around a weekly youth drop-in gathering held three evenings each month throughout the year. During the school year, this group meets on Friday nights and during the summer they meet on Wednesday nights. In addition to his work at Salem, Don is employed by the Baltimore County School System as a teacher at Relay Elementary School. In his teaching career, he has worked with children in grades one, two, and three. Recently, he has also begun serving as a technology liaison and integration teacher at the school. When engaged at these paid positions, Don enjoys working in the tech crew and/or directing plays with the Salem Players. He has been seen on the stage in a number of plays, but he has been an integral part of the tech crew since his stage debut in 1992.
