| A Checklist For Communion Servers | |
| 1 | Enter the chancel at the beginning of the Sanctus (Holy, holy, holy Lord) before the acolyte closes the gate |
| 2 | Stand on the pulpit side of the chancel, participating in the service. |
| 3 | At the beginning of the distribution, the Pastor will give you the bread or wine. If there are double the number of assistants, you will be directed to the side you are to serve. |
| 4 | If you are pouring the wine, during the distribution stay 2 or 3 persons behind the person distributing the bread; if you see that someone has forgotten a glass, quietly secure one from the usher. Remember that some persons may bring a cup of grape juice to the rail; pause and say to them, "The Blood of Christ, shed for you." |
| 5 | Usually the Worship Assistant will distribute bread, but should you be asked to do so, hold the paten with one hand, securing the bread with your fingers. Tear off a manageable piece (better too small than too large), and give the words, "The Body of Christ, given for you." Bless the children who have not yet been prepared and authorized to receive the sacrament. Say, "The blessing of Jesus be with you," or a blessing you prefer, and gently lay your right hand on the child's head (though for hygienic reasons you ought not be rubbing your hand in the child's hair) and/or make the sign of the cross on the child's forehead. |
| 6 | Return to your pew during the closing hymn. |
|
Thanks for your service in the leadership of our worship. You have been recommended by our Worship and Music Committee and approved by the Church Council for this service, and I know you consider it a trusted privilege and enjoyable pleasure. It's good to share the chancel with you. |
